The most effective way to defeat scammers is to know how to identify scams. You should just hang up on any call you’re uncertain of and ignore suspicious emails. Scammers are always finding new ways to steal your money and personal information by exploiting your fears.

One common tactic scammers use is posing as federal agents and other law enforcement. They may claim your Social Security number is linked to a crime. They may even threaten to arrest you if you do not comply with their instructions. Just hang up.

As a reminder, you should continue to remain vigilant of phone calls when someone says there’s a problem with your Social Security number or your benefits. If you owe money to Social Security, we will mail you a letter explaining your rights, payment options, and information about appealing.

There are a few ways you can identify a scam call. If you do business with us, remember that we will never:

  • Threaten you with benefit suspension, arrest, or other legal action unless you pay a fine or fee.
  • Promise a benefit increase or other assistance in exchange for payment.
  • Require payment by retail gift card, cash, wire transfer, internet currency, or prepaid debit card.
  • Demand secrecy from you in handling a Social Security-related problem.
  • Send official letters or reports containing personally identifiable information via email.

If you do not have ongoing business with our agency, it is unlikely we will contact you. If you get a suspicious call claiming to be from Social Security, you should hang up and report it to our law enforcement office at oig.ssa.gov.

Extension of Free Child Care for Essential Workers

The Tennessee Department of Human Services announced that it is extending its free child care offer to essential workers through the end of the year. The program makes payments directly to the child care provider in an effort to help parents who are essential workers stay on the job during the COVID-19 emergency. All essential workers addressed in Governor Bill Lee’s Executive Order 22 are now eligible for the program. Tennessee to Apply for Lost Wages Assistance Grant

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Commissioner Jeff McCord announced this week that the state will apply for a federal program adding $300 per week to unemployment benefits. To be eligible for the enhanced weekly benefit, unemployed Tennesseans must already qualify for a minimum of $100 in regular state unemployment benefits. It is currently unclear when recipients will receive the funds or how long they will last. The program could run until December 26 of this year, but it could run only a matter of weeks, depending on how quickly the finite funds are exhausted.

Online Sports Betting Expected to Launch November 1

After legislators passed a bill legalizing sports betting in May of 2019, the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation expects to have the online-only sports betting program live by November 1 of this year.

Operators of the online gambling system have not been approved by the organization’s Board of Directors, and applications are continuing to be reviewed.  Tennessee is the 18th state in the nation to legalize regulated sports betting.
