How to cut costs at Christmas
- Use the decorations that you have now instead of buying new. You can buy more when they are on sale after Christmas.
- When it comes to gifts for children, many people have adopted the 4-gift rule:
- Something they want
- something they need
- something to wear
- Something to read
- Give the gift of time. If you are short on cash, give a coupon to spend an afternoon or evening with someone. Have them over for dinner, attend a free event…Most relatives and friends would love just to have time with you.
- Visit a shut-in. Take children along with you. A visit like this will brighten the day of someone and will put life into proper perspective
- Nothing new. Many people have committed to buying gifts only from thrift stores, Craigslist, garage sales, etc. You can also make extra money by selling what you do not use.
- Homemade gifts – people love homemade gifts. If you are a photographer, volunteer to take pictures at a special event. Do you have old pictures of family? Frame them and give as gifts.
- If you purchase online, make sure that you get free shipping. Try Ebates; you will get cash back from purchases!
- Eat at home the whole month of December. Make your meals at home and make them budget friendly. Soups are easy to make and will stretch budget dollars.

Tater Tot Casserole
- First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Brown 1 – 2 lbs. of ground beef in a medium pot, season to taste, then drain the meat and set it aside.
- Then cook ½ – 1 pack of bacon in the same pot until it is crispy, then drain.
- Dice one whole yellow onion and sauté until caramelized in the pot.
- Then add the bacon and ground beef back to the pot.
- Add one can of condensed cream of chicken soup and one can of condensed mushroom soup and mix until the mixture is moist and the soup is heated.
- Then pour the mixture into a casserole dish and cover with a layer of tater tots and place in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the tater tots are golden brown.
- Then put a layer of shredded cheddar cheese on top and place back in the oven until the cheese melts and begins to brown, approximately 5 minutes.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes and serve.
- Other additions to this recipe that I like to mix in are canned mushrooms or jalapenos, for people who like their food a little spicy.
