Money Saving Habits

There are several habits that people have in order to save money. Sometimes I read about these and think, “that makes sense! I should have thought of that.”

Here are some that you might already do or may consider doing for yourself.

If you have a good habit, let me know. I’d love to put it in the next newsletter.

  • Buy in bulk – If you know that you will use something in the future and that it won’t expire
  • Freeze your leftovers -freeze for another meal or freeze in individual containers for lunch, or make double and freeze half
  • Make your meals at home – depending on what you’re cooking, home cooked are usually less expensive
  • Don’t purchase individual servings of cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, crackers, etc. – individual portions cost much more than the large containers
  • Grow vegetables and herbs in your backyard or in pots
  • Cancel subscriptions to magazines, clubs, Movie channels or anything else that you are not using
  • Buy in season produce
  • Stay home – play board games, have a potluck with friends instead of spending money on going out
  • Quit smoking
  • Consume sweets and alcohol in moderation
  • Place a limit on how much you will spend on certain items like shoes, clothing articles, gifts…
  • Manage with 1 car or buy a smaller car – you’ll save on insurance, tags and maintenance by owning only 1 car
  • Buy a whole ham and have it sliced rather than buying sliced lunch meat
  • Don’t allow credit card debt to add up
  • Sell what you are not using
  • Look for deals when shopping for appliances or furniture – use Craigslist
  • Use vinegar and other natural products for cleaning – you can find a host of natural cleaning recipes online. Here’s one https://www.thebalance.com/cleaning-with-vinegar-1387941

Perfect Baked Potatoes

  1. Heat oven to 350 F.
  2. Wash potatoes well under running water with scrub brush or dish rag
  3. Use a fork to pierce potatoes several times to allow steam to escape when baking
  4. Lightly coat potatoes with vegetable oil and salt (optional)
  5. Place on baking sheet and bake for an hour or until the largest potato is easily pierced with a fork.

Have a potato bar dinner using any of these toppings:

  • Butter
  • Sour cream
  • Chives
  • Chili
  • Taco meat
  • Chicken
  • Ham
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Olives
  • Bacon
  • Guacamole
  • Salsa
  • Corn
  • Cheese
  • mushrooms
  • white cheese sauce
